Seminarian saved

A loud sigh of relief could be heard in a crowded Lake County courtroom Tuesday afternoon when Judge Victoria Rossetti announced a sentence of probation rather than prison for a former Catholic seminary student who killed two friends while driving drunk last year.

Robert Spaulding, 28, of Buffalo Grove, pleaded guilty in February to reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol charges for a Sept. 15 crash that killed Jared Cheek, 23, and Matthew Molnar, 28, both students at the seminary, University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein.
Additionally, Spaulding "may be able to resume his studies to become a priest if the Wyoming Diocese, which sponsored him, agrees."
