M. Sneed of Sun-Times quoted 2/27 from a statement by Judge Anne Burke, who heads the National Review Board investigating sexual abuse by priests. It's from her preface to the board's report, in which she defends innocent priests.

They are "the Lord's treasured gifts to his people . . . men of holiness and generosity [who] nourish the people of God by their sacrifice and goodness." Theirs is an "unblemished ministry." They live "exemplary lives in the parishes across our nation."

Burke has a hard job, and there is great tension among priests and people, but overblown language does not help. Nor does excessive glorification of anyone's role. It's hard on the glorified, for one thing. Effective priests seem not to take it seriously. And lay people are well advised to pull back from such language.
